In the News: COVID-19 compounds trauma, but schools can help students heal

COVID-19 has brought with it great trauma. In New Orleans, we’ve lost loved ones, jobs, and a world in which we could shake hands with neighbors and go outside without masks. Our children feel these losses. And for many of them, while this crisis is unprecedented, trauma is not. Many of our young people carry heavy weights that just got heavier; COVID-19 compounds existing pain and reopens old wounds.

GNOF Awards $505,000 in New COVID-19 Disaster Response & Restoration Grants

Today, the Greater New Orleans Foundation announced the award of $505,000 to nonprofits in Southeast Louisiana providing assistance to families with young children, grassroots community health outreach, support for incarcerated and returning citizens, opportunity youth serving organizations, and supports for workers and small minority-owned business in the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Of the $1,178,000 GNOF gave from its Disaster Fund as of June 15, the majority went to health equity. GNOF invested heavily in Federally Qualified Health Centers hoping to aid uninsured people in their area — a population whose health vulnerabilities likely contributed to the high death rate among African Americans in Southeast Louisiana.

Greater New Orleans Foundation Highlights $70,000 in LGBTQ Fund Grants

Today, the Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF) announced recent grants from its LGBTQ Endowed Fund totaling $70,000 to area nonprofits. The Greater New Orleans Foundation LGBTQ Endowed Fund provides grants to organizations and programs that increase the quality of life and access to opportunity for LGBTQ individuals and families, particularly the most marginalized members of the community, including elders, transgender youth and adults of color, low-income LGBTQ people, and LGBTQ youth of color.
