Disaster Response and Restoration

Provide help for when help is needed most.

Disaster Response and Restoration Field of Interest Fund

Since 2005, the Greater New Orleans Foundation has built a track record of making impactful grants after a disaster. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, we created a $23 million housing recovery fund and helped bring more than 9,000 families home.

Our homegrown experience has taught us the importance of mobilizing quickly to address immediate needs and the importance of long-term investments to support rebuilding over time. We have responded to the BP Oil Spill, Hurricane Rita, the August 2016 Floods, February 2017 Tornados in New Orleans East, the 2017 Hurricane Season with Harvey, Irma, and Maria, COVID-19, Hurricane Ida and the 2022 Arabi Tornado.

When you give to our Response and Restoration Fund, the Foundation is able to mobilize and support a network of voluntary organizations active in disasters (VOADS) whose expertise is deployed locally, nationally and internationally. Through its disaster grantmaking strategy, the Foundation coordinates with a network of community foundations to get immediate support to the most vulnerable citizens and to help impacted communities meet long-term needs as they recover and rebuild.

Our grantmaking is guided by the following principles:

  • Resiliency
  • Equity
  • Measurable Impact
  • Sustainability
  • Civic Engagement
